Default Macro advice?

Does anyone have an opinion on a good digital camera under 1000.00 new or used that can take a macro shot as close as 1 or 2 inches or closer. Most of the "great " cameras out there don't seem to focus on macro ability? I'm interested in shooting super macro only and could care less about anything further than a foot away from the lens!

Look for a Nikon Coolpix 990, 995 (both 3 Megapixels) or 4500 (4 Megapixels). You should be able to find a refurbished 4500 for under $400.00 if you shop carefully (although they seem to be scarce right this minute).

These cameras can all "fill the frame" with an object as small as 3/4" across with virtually no distortion (because the macro "sweet spot" is at around half zoom). No other digital cameras "straight from the box" can even come close to the "swivel bodied" Nikons for Macro ability. They can focus from less than an inch to infinity in Macro Mode.

You also have very fine control over aperture (for increasing Depth of Field). The older 2MP Nikon Coolpix 950 also has a great macro mode, but Depth of Field control isn't as fine as in the newer models (990, 995, 4500).

BTW, this site uses Nikons for product photos -- see this link:

Depending on what you are photographing, you may also want to consider the optional Nikon Cool-Light SL1. It uses a circle of white LED's to illuminate closeup subjects:
