Default Advice on a 3MP / 3x Optical / under $250 US?

Hey folks,

Not to throw one more "which camera?" post on the pile, but I'm stuck. I'm looking for a digicam with only a few basic criteria:

- 3 Megapixels minimum
- 3x optical zoom minimum, don't care about digital
- Quickest possible shutter speed (single and multiple)
- Smaller physical size would be nice
- I can't spend more than $250 US before shipping.

Obviously I'd like higher resolution and optical zoom if possible, but both are just a bonus.

I'd like to use the camera primarily for shooting daylight scenery and live music.

Where I'm getting stuck is on a whole ton of contradictory reviews on each camera. I'm hoping if you nice folks can give me a few specific suggestions to check into further, I might be able to cut through some of the nonsense.

Steve listed some good choices above. But the Canon A70 which both he and I gave really great reviews for, is now on sale at some locations for under $250.00. Look around. A few retailers are are still trying to squeeze out the full $299 for it, but some are offering pretty decent sales - some of which may even include an extra memory card. Check your Sunday paper for the store ads.

If all else fails, "Buydig" is a decent online reseller, and they have the A70 for around $230.... link:
