Default Tough Choices - Fuji - Olympus - HP

Trying to find my first digital (avid SLR user). Know a few things that probable conflict:

Like long zooms but would really like something small enough to ski and bike with. Like the auto lens covers but don't see them in over 3X Optical. I figure a 3X optical digigally zoomed to 6 effective brings a 4 MP image down to effectively 1 MP. Not enough for nice 5x7 - 8x10s, even thought I don't do that ordingarily, I think I will. So probably stuck with a 6X, but a bit bigger than I would like. So I am looking at the Fuji 3800, HP 850 (maybe just too big), the Olympus 720UZ (or 730UZ). The Sony 7X7 series is just too big. Any help would be appreciated.

You may like to consider the Canon Powershot S40 in the 4 MP range, that features a sliding lens cover which doubles as the power switch as well.
The zoom, however is a 3X and extends in the range of 35-105mm (35mm equi.)

Default Camera?

Look at this web site for a flip lens cap: http://www.olympuscap.homestead.com/

I purchased one for my C4040 and it works great and adds extra protection for the lens.

You can also purchase the CL4 tube to add extra lens and filters: https://emporium.olympus.com/innards/emp.asp

The flip lens cover will not work if you use the CL4.
