I've been extremely pleased with the performance of the similar Canon A10 so my vote is for the A40. The Canon also has a 3x optical zoom versus the Sony's 2x. The canon has a wider wide angle and longer telephoto which will make it more flexible. Digital zoom is a scam, ignore it. The Canon also uses compact flash memory which is consistently less expensive than Sony memory stick. A 128mb compact flash card should be around $40 versus $60-65 for a same size memory stick. I've seen 256mb CF as little as $70 which will give you a vacation worth of capacity. You'd have to get multiple, more costly memory sticks for the same capacity.

The Sony does include NiMH batteries and a charger so add that to the cost of the Canon. Get at least two sets of batteries and a fast charger.
