I'm following PMA for news on new digital lenses. I noticed that the following two new lenses (among others) were announced:

Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC

Tamron SP AF 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di-II

Looking at the specs for both, they seem to be "almost" identical. For example:

Minimum Aperture = F22
Lens Construction = 15 elements in 13 groups
Minimum Focus Distance = 17.7 inches
Filter Size = 62mm

Slightly Different:
Angle of View = 69.3 - 7.1 (Sigma) vs. 75 - 7 (Tamron)
Maximum Magnification = 1:4.4 (Sigma) vs. 1:5.7 (Tamron)
Overall Length = 3.1 inches (Sigma) vs. 3.3 inches (Tamron)
Weight = 14.3 oz. (Sigma) vs. 14 oz. (Tamron)

If these lenses are indeed "almost" identical, who makes better lenses, Sigma or Tamron?

Since the specs are basically identical, there is basically no way to tell without actually seeing the output of the lens. In general Sigma makes better lenses (IMO) but in some cases Tamron makes a better lens. So there is really no way to tell who's will be the best until the reviews start coming in.

Now, if you said it was Sigma vs.... say, Phoenix then I think I could safely say Sigma.

ps. The software for Lens design has gotten really good in the last several years. Even the best Sigma didn't touch Nikon or canon for a long time (sigma made decent lenses, but didn't compete at the top end.) This changed a little while ago and now the best Sigma makes is actually quite good.
