In a regular digicam the optical zoom would appear as:
X10 or any other number.
But at zoom lenses zoom would appear as:
18-300 mm or any other range of numbers.
How can you compare both of these ways to measure (18-70= X8 or something)?

The 18-300 specification is actually a lot more meaningful than the 10x quoted on digicams. On a 35mm camera 50mm gives approximately the same view as the human eye. So 18 tells you this lens has a wide angle view at one end of the range just over twice as wide as the human eye. The 300 tells you that the longest end of the range gives you a 6x magification over the human eye.

Most reviews will quote the 35mm equivalence of the digicam lens so you can make a comparison that way.

To covert the 18-300 to a x factor 300/18 = 16.6.

The problem with 10x is that 10-100 is a 10x zoom with an extreme wide angle and a short telephoto 100-1000 would also be a 10x zoom but a short telephoto to an extreme telephoto.

OK so no digicam has a 100-1000 zoom so maybe it doesn't seem that important but the wide angle end of digicam zooms range from around 28mm to 38mm so a 10x zoom could be a 28-280 or 38-380 quite a difference for something that on first glance appears the same.

My Panasonic has a 12X zoom, but also printed on the barrel there's the explanation - 38mm-432mm.
