Default A question from a Total Beginner

I just got my new digital camera (Canon powershot s30). I have tons of questions, but I will start with the one on batteries. I have read Steve's suggestion on getting NiMh batteries. I intend to do so, but I start to wonder if they are going to work with my camera. The shape of the original battery is not identical with the ordinary AA one. Does that mean I have to put 3 or 4 to make it work?

From the specs :
Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (type: NB-2L)
7.4 V , 570 mAh

You have to use that proprietary kind of battery .
May be there are third party manufacturer who offer equivalent too (cheaper).

When people here talk about getting high capacity Nimh batts, they are refering to AA cells. Some cams take these, others like yours use a proprietary more expensive manufacturer's special.

Unfortunately the battery chemistry and the voltages (apart from size) are different. So you must replace like type with like. There are some makers offering equivalents, which may be cheaper (like with mobile phone batts).
