Does anyone know the best setting to acheive a very shallow depth of field using the oly 740 I have tried the portait mode or using f2.8 in a priority as you would with a film slr but the results are not the same any reason why ?

Because of the smaller sensor in digicams, even though the camera may be a 38-380mm 35mm equivalent, it is still in reality a 6.3 to 63mm lens. This means that at the widest angle setting even at f/2.8, you still have a large DOF. Your best chance to get narrow DOF is to use full zoom at the widest possible aperture. The web site below is handy site for calculating DOF for just about any camera. Just remember to use the actual lens focal lenght and not the 35mm equivalent.
