how much zoom do you need to get nice wildlife pictures?

That depends on how close you can get to your subject. If your shooting birds or other flighty or easily spooked animals (or dangerous!!) the more the zoom the better. Most bird shooters use a focal length of 400mm or more. The bad part is these lenses are large, fast and expensive.
