Default Photoshop 6.01 and Cropping

I just started using Photoshop for Digital Photo cropping. As I posted earlier, I am getting really poor quality after taking a 4 mega photo shot at maximum resolution. Usually I am cropping one area of the photo to make a 4x6"

A friend recommended that I change the "Resolution" in Photoshop from 72 pixels/inch which is defaulted to 300 pixels/inch.

Is this a good recommendation? Won't this create pixels that don't exist in my photo?

Any help from you all regarding cropping properly is greatly appreciated.
