What is the main reason for updating firmware? If I update a firm will it cause any harm to the camera. Like if the picture quality is very good, after updating will it become worse or vice versa, etc.

It is usually to correct an error or to add a feature, such as the Pentax firmware that adds support for the new high capacity SD cards.

Another example is the early Sony H2 did not recognise memory sticks madeby Sandisk and needed the firmware updating.

Certaincameras have had hacked firmware produced by fans of the camerato unlock features.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel had a similar firmware to the Eos 10D , butsome advanced featureswhere disabled on the cheaper camera.

So someone devised a hack to turn these features on. :G

The Dimage Z2 had hacked firmware to enable saving images in RAW !

If your batteries fail while upgrading then its quite likely to trash the camera and result in it being sent in for servicing.

Unless the technicians are incompetent its unlikely that a firmware upgrade will make things worse, as its generally assumed that the firmware will have been tried out first.

If your camera does have a firmware update issued, read the instructions carefully, make sure the camera has fullycharged batteries(or is connected to the mains) and then read theinstructions again.

Unless you trust thesource completely or feel like a new camera, don't install hacked firmware, well at least not till a few thousand other peoplehave installed it first !
