I originally posted this in the Canon Lenses Forum and probably should have posted it in the Newbie Help Forum.

I am an novice/amateur photographer and I recently purchased a Canon 30D with a 17-85mm IS Lens.

My main interests are landscapes/scenery and people but I plan on expanding into other fields.

I am seeking advice on what additional lenses I should buy so that my equipment will let me shoot most subjects.

My budget is $1800.00. I have considered purchasing the 70-200 2.8 IS. I have also thought about the 70-300 4/5.6 IS and using the remaining funds for the 70-200 2.8 Non IS.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

We need more information about what areas you want to "Expand" into.
The 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens, but is heavy and expensive. If you don't need the f2.8 (because you're not doing sports) then its a waste of money. Consider getting 80-200 f4 instead. It's just as good optically, much lighter and cheaper. I know several landscape people who really like it.

I don't know how good the 17-85 is, but you should more be thinking about if the lens does what you want. If not, then look for a higher quality lens, or something with a different zoom range.

So look at the images you take and figure out both what you're unable to do with what you have, and if you're getting the quality shots you want. If not, figure out if its your or your equipment. Then go from there.
