Sometimes when I try to take shots with my Nikon D50 with the kit lens, the lens does not respond to the body (it doesn't focus, or let me change aperture/shutter speed). The control panel says "off".

It fixes itself when I wait long enough, but I'm missing some very good shots. Would anyone know if the problem is with the lens or the body? How can I get it fixed?

Are you sure the lens has been completely turned on the mount until it latches?

Is there any foreign matter on the lens or body contacts?

Have you tried other lenses on that body?

Have you tried unmounting and mounting the lens several times so as to scrub the contacts together?

You may wish to try cleaning the contacts. DO NOT use an abrasive cleaner such as an eraser on the contacts, it will cause scratching and make the problem worse. I would suggest lens cleaning solution on a lint free or microfiber cloth to wipe the contacts. DO NOT drop the lens cleaner directly on the contacts, put a few drops on the cloth and wipe gently.
