Which one of the less $ is the best? D70, 70s, D50, D40, D40x?

That's a tough question. Image quality wise, probably the D40 or D40x. They are the newer models with newer processing and arguably a better sensor. In terms of features and flexibility, the D70s is probably the better choice. The D70 has a wider feature set and can AF with all Af lenses, not just the AF-S. However, it is older, and it's not likely you'll find a new one, and buying used presents a whole other set of risks. For a beginner, I'd say stick with the D40 or D40x. If you're a more seasoned, looking for a backup, or are doing some paid work, I'd probably go D70s. I'd avoid the D70 all together...it had an issue with failures (google BGLOD for details), and a smaller LCD.
