Hi - I have just been doing some browsing of the forums. Are you telling me that if I upgrated from my D40x to the 5000 that because I am using CS3 that I will not be able to convert my raw images? I have LR 2.4 as well. This all gets so confusing. Probably the best thing to do is not be greedy and upgrade.

Lightroom 2.4 can convert the D5000 .nef files. But, if you want to use the Adobe Camera Raw plugin in CS3, you'd need to convert to DNG first (making it a two step conversion effort).

That's because the newer 5.4 version of Adobe Camera Raw that supports the D5000 won't work with CS3. You'd need to upgrade to CS4 to use the newer Camera Raw 5.x plugin versions.

The D5000 raw images can be edited in Lightroom 2.4, and then sent to Photoshop CS3 for additional editing if necessary. Lightroom will tell you that there may be some incompatibilities, and will give you the option to let Lightroom render the image (i.e. create the TIF), and then you simply edit the TIF image in Photoshop. I use Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2.4 with my Nikon D40, and I get along just fine. However, many who have upgraded to Photoshop CS4 seem to feel that Camera Raw 5.x is a real step forward in technology.
