Default need opinions please

I have a Nikon D40 and love it, had it since sep 2008.

I have the 18-55 & 55-200 lenses, which I am prepared to sell these lenses. I've been researching alot of different lenses and i'm on a tightish budget.

I really want a 12-24mm, 50mm 1.8, 60mm or higher macro lens, 70-300mm or longer depending on cost.

My question is if I stay with the D40 and want to buy Nikon lenses i'm going to be buying AF-S lenses, which cost quite a bit.

But if I buy a new or used (D80, D200 or D90 body only) they cost a little more than the D40 but I don't have to buy AF-S lenses, so it will be cheaper in the long run?

I want some different opinions why I should keep the D40 or why it would be better to switch to a different body before I start spending $$$ on lenses.

You may find that by selecting the lenses that will satisfy your first, then parking the most compatible body under them, you will be more satisfied in the long run.
