anyone know how to set up a D90 camera to receive signals from the ML-L3 remote?

Quick way - next to the top LCD screen, the middle button (3 overlapping rectangles), then spin the wheel until the remote icon shows on the LCD. Note, there are two remote icons, one is immediate release, the other is delayed 'self-timer' release.

It will remain in remote trigger mode for about a minute, and if no action revert back to default. You can expand that time by going into the menu system.

I should also add to this, I think the remote sensor on your camera is on the front of the cam, it is on my d40, so you either have to have the remote slightly in front of the camera for it to work, or if you are behind the camera. try to bounce the signal off of other objects around. it will not work in my experience with just pointing it at the rear of the cam.
