Default Best Nikon D5000 lense

I have a Nikon D5000 with a Nikkor 18-55mm. I recently sold my Nikkor 70-300mm because I wasn't getting the pics I wanted in low light (Nighttime football, indoor basketball, school dances, etc.) I loved the lense for everything else, but want a similar zoom capability that I can use for outdoor family vacations as well as the above scenarios. Considering the Tamron 70-200. Any comments or other suggestions?

For soports/action, the Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM focuses faster. And, of course, Nikon's equivalents are better but more expensive.

Your post doesn't indicate whether or not you are aware of the relationship between light and f-stop so sorry if you know all the basics already but if you don't then you need a zoom with a lower f-stop such as the famed 70-200mm f2.8. If you're not a pro then it's probably worth going with a lower cost one like Sigma or Tamron.
