like bob i would recomend the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED

I your situation - I would keep the 18 - 55mm and buy the Nikon 70 - 300 VR. It is a superb lens, a good middle of the road choice, with decent reach, not too heavy and good IQ.

I have had the Sigma 150mm - 500mm and while the image is nice and the reach is excellent, it is very heavy and not the kind of thing you want to haul around all day (while you can with the 70 - 300mm).

the kind of things that you want to photograph (zoo and scenes) are better done with the 300mm than the 500mm.
