Ran across this interesting piece on the D600.

I had dust in my D40x and it didn't look like that, much more smudgy. Plus my dust was more spread about. Also I shot a lots of pics at a dusty race meeting, clouds of it all around me. This demo is in a room where I would'nt think there was to much dust around. So my guess is it's oil splatter. Like the D7000 had.

Latest news is that the dust/oil issue fades with use; after 3000 the issue starts going away

I've got a car like that.
My Honda when new had squeaky front brakes. Honda told me dont worry it will clear in use you just need a few 1000's on the clock. After going back several times about it and being fobbed off with minor adjustments, I got used to it. Recently my front pads wore out and I had them replaced . Guess what no more squeeking. The moral to the story is " dont believe it " it sounds like another fob off to me.

at dpreview forums was a report that tests showed it faded out with use - then qualified later some but not all 600s, your mileage may vary.
I'm very happy with my D600, but so far I'm not taking many photos showing sky in bright sunlight at f22 either.
