Not sure if the camera can be set to shoot B&W. You can always convert your image after you take the picture using Photoshop or Picassa or other similar photo editors.

press menu button>go to shooting menu>go to settings>manage picture control>monochrome

Or better yet, pull out reference manual>read it from front to back> put it in camera bag> pull out each time you have a question.

You'll enjoy your camera a lot more if you take the time to understand how to get the most out of it.

So you want to be a better photographer? Open your eyes and take a look at what is all around you.

I don't know what you are using for software to edit your images. But IF you are using Lightroom or Photoshop/ACR it won't do you any good to use the monochrome setting on your raw images. Those programs will not read that adjustment. You'll have to create your black and white image using the tools in the software.
