Maintaining very high standards for quality, what's the largest print I can expect to create with the D70, either at home (accepting the limited quality of my printer) or getting the prints made by someone else?

Is 300dpi the standardimage resolutionpeople use to print high quality photos? (ie do you need 300dpi to maintain the best quality)

Just trying to understand what the upper limits are on printed output for my D70 before the grace period ends.

Well, there areseveral considerations here - the camera being the least of them. I have printed shots taken with my D70 atup to A3 size with the Canon i9900 with excellent results using 300dpi, but not many people have wide carriage printers. Most are A4 size maximum. What I am trying to say is that your concern should be more with the quality of the printer and the paper than the camera.
