I have owned a Canon AE-1 for many years. I wanted to move into the digital age so I purchased a Canon A-40 point and shoot about 2 years ago and have enjoyed it but miss the flexibility that a SLR camera offers. So now I am seriously considering purchasing the Nikon D70.
My concern is about the picture format. Generally, I would prefer to shoot in RAW mode and edit my photo. However, traveling on vacation and business when I tend to take many pictures, I would not have ample time to work with the images and would probably prefer to shoot in JPEG Fine mode.
I have 2 questions:

Does anyone know the quality of the JPEG Fine format as apposed to RAW format?

What software is recommended for editing the images?

Jpeg large/fine is 3008 x 2000 pixels files run around 2 MB depending on content, very nice quality. RAW can range 4 to 6 MB. They are compressed(lossless like a zip) in the camera. For RAW I use Camera RAW/PhotoShop.
