A local camera store is offering the following two packages. Which is the better lens? I like the fact that the Sigma lens will provide up to 187.50mm telephoto as opposed to the Nikon only providing 105mm (35mm equivalent) but does the Nikon AF-S feature on the lens kit provide faster focusing then the Sigma lens? Which would provide the best possible image quality? What about low-light performance?

Package A:

Nikon D70

Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm F3.5-4.5G IF-ED

Package B:

Nikon D70

Sigma 18-125mm F3.5-5.6 DC

For image quality i would bet on the Nikon. Also, the AF-S will focus faster then the Sigma. They have the same maximum aperture F3.5so they should be similar performer regarding available ligth.

Of course everyone will recommend Nikon in Nikon forum :G
Just be aware that the 18-125 is also an excellent 'practical' alternative: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic2/143791

I'd say go with the 18-70, then track down a 50/1.8 for about $100 as well.

If the price is the same get the Nikon lense, it's excellent and faster at the long end.

Depends on your usage really. I am in no way against Sigma or Tamron, and fromthe reports I hear of the Sigma 70/200 HPO it sounds as if it is a great buy, so why not this Sigma? I have the 18/70 kit lens and it is cheap and plastic but functional nevertheless, so I have no doubt that on build quality the Sigma will match it. Given the long end of the Sigma it seems a worthy alternative, but I come back to the main question - what will your usage be? General photography from time to time, or heavy daily use? If the latter I would go Nikon based purely on my own experience of Nikon lenses.
