I considered posting this request for help under the "Studio Lighting, Flash, and Other" forum but decided this is a problem nearer and dearer to the hearts of the Nikon dSLR followers.

I would like to set up a portable lighting system consisting of my D70 with its SB800 on the camera and two or three of what Peter Inova calls "inexpensive slave flash units." I would like the slaves to be wireless for both convenience and the safetyfactor that comes from not having cords running everywhere. The real problem seems to stem from the fact that I also want to shoot in the iTTL mode to the maximum extent possible.

All of the reading that I have done so far tells me that the problem comes from the fact that the only infrared triggered slave units capable of dealing with the preflashes generated by either the camera-mounted Speedlightor SB800 are the SB600 and the SB800 itself. I felt I could justify the expense of ONE SB800 because of the features it offered andI am very happy withit as a single flash unit. There is no way I can justify getting two or three more SB800s or even SB600s to act as iTTL slaves.

It looks like my three alternatives are:

1. Buy SB600s to serve as slaves

2. Use the manual flash mode only

3. Use wired slaves with a trigger

If anyone knows of any other light-activated, "inexpensive slave flash units" capable of dealing with the iTTL preflashes, please let me know. Any other suggestions for dealing with this problem would also be appreciated.

There's several slave brands that can 'learn' to ignore the pre-flash: http://www.steves-digicams.com/dsf-1s.html

The Sigma is fully i-TTL compatible but slighly less expensive: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/flashes/fl...ls.asp?id=3257
