I presently own a Nikon N80 film SLR along with the Nikon AF-S VR 24-120mm lens, Nikon AF 50mm F1.8D lens, Nikon SB-600 speedlight (upgraded from my Nikon SB-28 speedlight) and recently ordered the new Nikon D50 dSLR along with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm lens. I'm now looking for a second telephoto zoom lens that I can use on both Nikons.

A friend of mine owns the Nikon D70 and I had the opportunity to try the Sigma 70-300 APO Super II lens and the Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm lens. I was not impressed with the Sigma lens and unfortunately the Nikon DX lens will not work on my film SLR.

What would you suggest as a second telephoto zoom lens for my Nikons? I really like the Canon 70-200 F4.0L lens (except for the white color) but Nikon does not have an equivalent lens. My budget would be around $1000 Canadian.

Take a look at the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX - This lens in the 'EX' professional series (unlike the 70-300 APO Super II) is practically a prime according to its MTF and comes with HSM (i.e. silent and fast AF with full time AF/manual overide). IMHO it's practically a steal since it costs less than a 70-200 f/2.8 EX plus 1.4x TC!

BTW this lens is a tad sharper than my 120-300 f/2.8 EX @ 1/2 the price:
