If you are taking photography seriously, have need to use special lenses, willing to do after exposure processing, DSLR may be for you. Remember the cost of good lenses you will have to buy will very likely be more than what you pay for the camera body.

If you just enjoy taking photographs and do not expect first class results all the time. Will not want to buy good lenses at high cost you are probablybetter off with a p&s cameras like Panasonic FZ20/30, Sony 828, etc.

I have both type of camera but prefer my D50 as I need high quality teleand high ISO for birds photography. But even with birds photography simple p&s camerasmay doeven betterin certain situations.

This photo was taken with Sony DSC-V1 when I was going out birding with a friend who is an experienced photographer using a D100 and tripod. He missed the bird while Igotten this picture hand holding the Sony p&s camera.
