If one were to want an ultimate zoom lens for just a few occasional shots - could you buy the cheaper tamron/sigma manual focus lenses to use on the D50 body ?

If so - from my understanding - you would obviously have to :

manual focus (duh -given)

But - what about metering - If I understand correctly - some will meter - some will not those that will not - does that mean you can't use them at all - how do you know which ones will/won't meter ?

Also what about this lens

I believe that majority of MF lenses dont have the necessary chip to enable metering in D50.
Older lenses tend to use mechanic coupling for metering and D50 doesn't support that.
You can still use lenses that dont meter, you just have to estimate proper exposure by your self.
