If you're on a tight budget I would also recommend you start with a good prime lens like the 50mm f/1.4. You'll get tack sharp pics! Great for portraits and general landscape photography. And it's cheap! Check www.pbase.com for sample pics taken using the 50mm f/1.4.

Actually, you could save another $100 or so and pickup the 1.8 version. Not as fast (good in low light) but still very sharp.

That's my 2 cents...

I just bought the D80 myself and I found an 18-70 on EBay that looks brand new. It is very versatile. I paid $205 including shipping and got it in 3 days. It did have a buy now price, as I did not want to wait for an auction to end. I could have saved a few dollars, but I knew I had a D80 in the mail, and just imagine having the body and not being able to play with it! I got lucky and the lens arrived the day before the camera.
I think for the money it is hard to beat.

I agree...The Nikon 17-80mm is a sweet deal of a lense. Another nice [but hard to find] lense is the Tokina 28-70 macro. I found one on e-bay 2 weeks ago, the macro performance is stunning.Hoya makes the glass for Tokina lenses, it shows :G
