I know this is one dumb question but humor me...I have the nikon d80 slr camera..lens question.....is the picture taken with a stand alone 55 mm single lens the same as one taken with the 18x55 lens set at 55mm , providing the f stop is the same, same shot , same time...what would be the difference

Yes, they should be.
There could be slight differences because a fixed focal length lens is generally of high quality (but not always.) so the fixed 55mm lens might have slightly more detail or slightly more contrast, maybe less distortion or ....

But in generally, for the average user, yes - they will be the same.
