I already own a Nikon D80 with the Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm lens for my more serious work.

My wife would like a DSLR of her own to use on family gatherings. Should I go for the Nikon AF-S DX 18-135mm kit or should I go for the body only option with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm lens instead? My wife wants a fast-focusing, sharp (relatively light) Nikon zoom lens with her D40.
What would you suggest / recommend?

I think the 18-135mm is a good choice, fast focus, very sharp and light. She will be able zoom quite a bit with this lens, which I'm sure she will love.

I agree with jotajota-

The 18-135mm Nikkor is an excellent choice.
