Now being new to any serious level of photography I know this will seem a dumb question.

As background, 3-4 weeks ago I brought the AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8G IF-ED. Now when you zoom with this lenseverything is done internally i.e. there is no extension in the lenght of the lens.

Today I brought the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200 f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED. All the same abbreveations (excepting f-range). So I was very surprised to find that when I zoomed the barrel particularly doubled in length.

I thought I was getting the same zoom, focusing system. I must be missing something in the labelling on these lens. How do you know whether a lens will extend or not from it's Product Lable/Code.

Many thanks

Pro vs. consumer glass. I don't know believe there are any hard & fast rules, but:

1) A fixed (f2.8 for example) vs. variable (f3.5 - 5.6) apature is one indicator.

2) A short 2x - 3x zoom vs a long 10x zoom is another sign.

3) Price is often an indicator as well & a general reflection of manufacturing & design cost.

Overall, it's best to check or ask first though.

Hi Sydneykiwi,

You still have a really great all around lens with the 18/200"VR" . I have both and I don't ever use my 2.8 at all anymore. I like the 18/200 range and with the"VR" function I have not had a problem with low light at 200mm. It is the lens I use for 99% of all my pictures. (including portraits)
