I have been looking to get a lens for my D-40 and a co worker of my wife gave me her Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX lens. She said it will only auto focus some of the time. I put it on my camera and it worked fine....I took 20 shots and the auto focus had no problem. I took some other shots later in the day and it did not auto focus. Is this normal for this lens? Is there something I can do myself or send it off to have it serviced?

This could be anything from dirty contacts to bad wiring to defective focus motor or binds in the lens. Try cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner on a lint free cloth to see if that helps otherwise have it serviced professionally. DO NOT rub the contacts with anything abrasive as that only makes things worse.
