Default new lense D40X

I have the 18-200 VR. I love it and have found it very handy. I am ready to try something new. Is there a decent macro lense under $400.00? Or something else you could suggest. Thanks.

There are no bad macro lenses. Nikon makes two that are stabilized (the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED and the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR ) and three that aren't (the AF Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D, the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED, and the AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED.) The least expensive one is the AF Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D at about $470.

Sigma, Tamron and Tokina also make macro lenses for the Nikon mount, but none of them are stabilized. Four of them come in under your limit. The Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX DG, the Tokina 35mm f/2.8 AT-X M35 PRO DX and 100mm f/2.8 AT-X 100 PRO D, and the Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro.

The most important thing about macro lenses is the focal length. Longer focal length macro lenses will let you back up so as to not block your own light and to not frighten animate subjects. But in controlled environments with inanimate subjects, shorter focal lengths can let you work in a more confined area.

What do you wnat to shoot?
