Default Which lens for Yellowstone : 18-200VR or 70-300VR ?

Planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park later this year. Planning to take our Panasonic FZ-35 but I'm also considering a D-90 purchase. I really miss the fast startup and high frames per second. I'm also wondering if the higher ISO capability of the D-90 would help the low light performance of these lenses.

Looking for recommendations and or observations about lens choices for this park or the Rocky Mountains in general. I've owned an 18-200VR and it was a wonderful lens. It's great for close-ups and scenery. Would I miss the extra reach of the 70-300VR ?

I have the Pana FZ7 which gives me a 420mm reach so I guess yours gives you a lot more.
So if you get the 70-300 VR what will you do for close ups ,rely on the Pana?.
If you are interested in low light capabilty it sounds like a twin lens kit is needed especially if you want the 300mm reach.
I have the 18-200Vr and find it is very good in low light but the extra 100mm would obviously stretch it a bit more. If price is a factor why not look at a cheaper body + two lenses. The VR is good indoors in poor lighting.
The D5000 is very good.
As you are getting new lenses the in body focusing on the D90 isn't so important.

d90 with a sigma 70-200 f2.8 would be win, or if you want the nikkor 70-300 3.5-5.6 af vr is actually getting cheaper now. You have to remember the 90 has a cropped sensor, so these two lense become 105-275, and 105- 400 lenses.

Thanks for the replies.

I seem to be doing more nature photography these days, so I'm leaning towards the 70-300 VR lens for the extra reach. I've had one in the past and it gives good results without a tripod.

Does the Sigma 70-200 2.8 come in VR ?

What do users think of the Nikon 18-105 VR ? It seems to be a popular kit lens. Would this be a good companion to the 70-300 VR ?
