but you actually find yourself fumbling to get it on correctly, if not it will fall off

Maybe skipping the lens hood and going with an alternative, might be a good idea for you.

i never have a problem with my cap on my 85 1.8 with a hood on it. I just pull the taps and push it down, i have never had it fall off either.
