Default Nikon ED AF 80-200 f/2.8 D

I am shooting a D80 and have been using a AF-S VR Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED lens indoors at cheerleading competitions. The pics have been fair to say the least. I have an opportunity to get the 80-200 f/2.8 lens. I have read that it will be a much better lens in low light and it is a fast lens. Will this work indoors for the competitions with the lower light! I figure I would ask people in the field verses just reading all the manufactor websites.

Thanks in advance

The larger constant aperture will help. You still will likely have to be at an iso of 1600 or even 3200 to get shutter speeds fast enough to freeze action.
