Default newbie here. NEED help!

In order to stay married, I must not buy the huge lens I lust after to get closer to eagles deer, and other wildlife.

I can only spend about $800 max for the scope/ adpater and tripod for the Nikon d90 I have now.

Used equip that works well woudl be great too.

What telephoto do you have now? 70-300? 300 f4? 1.4x telextender?

The professional grade long telephoto lens run to the $5,000 to $15,000 range and the used ones aren't much better!

There are several affordable third party lenses that, while in the $1000 to $1500 range new, you may be able to find a deal on a used one:

Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Tamron SP AF200-500mm F/5-6.3 Di

These are the better affordable third party lenses. There are others but the quality goes downhill from here.
