I faced that same delema a while ago. I went with the 50, and that lens pretty much lives on my D200. It works for me in general. Once in a while I have an issue "I can't back up enough", primarily in a night club to get the whole band on stage I find myself squished into the back corner and wish I could take one more step back. On the other hand when I had a 50 on my film camera (equiv to 35 on DX), I frequently found myself getting closer than comfortable ("you're invading my personal space"). I love the 18-55 kit lens on my D3200 for general purpose walking around lens, but it's not fast enough to use in a dark club.

If you are taking a lot of people pictures, I'd say go with the 50. If you are more into landscapes, go with the 35.
