...whether a Speedlight SB27 is compatible with the Nikon D70? I'm dithering at the moment - whether to upgrade to the Sony DSC-F828 (already have the 717), or to go to digital SLR. I've got an extra Nikon lens - an AF Nikkor 80-200, and also a Tamron 100-300 which works fine on my Nikon SLR F70, but I can't find any info about the Speedlight. Any experience with the Tamron lens and/or the Speedlight would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately the flash isn't compatible in any TTL mode. So that leaves you with setting up the flash for every shot. You can do what I did and sell your flash on ebay and buy the SB-800. It is AWESOME. The built in wireless is just the beginning. The light from this flash is so clean. Easily the best shoe flash I've ever used. Hope this helps.
