I want to buy a medium length lens to add to my kit. I already have a 19-35mm and a 80-400mm lens.

I am a sports photographer and although for the majority of my work I rely on the 80-400mm VR lens, there's always the presentation/podium shots where neither of my lenses is overly useful.

I'm looking for something to cover the inbetween shots where a wide angle loses the impact of the subject and the zoom which you need to be a light year away from the subject!

I have sourced a price for a Nikon AF 24-85 f2.8-4D + HB-25 which seems to be reasonable, but before I commit to buy it I would like to know if there are any better alternatives I should consider? Or any reasons why this lens isn't worth buying?

Never used on of those, but you may want to consider an old 35-70 2.8. I picked one up on Ebay for $200 and it is a fantastic lens. The only drawback is that it starts at 35, but if that's what you're looking for it may be for you.
