I am new to digital and slr photography. I have a d70 with the kit lens. I hear the 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens. Can it be used for macro photography too?

For macro you need the 60mm Micro lens http://www.europe-nikon.com/details....&catId=124

Or try the Sigma 50 mm Macro http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/macro/50mm.htm

I'm using the previous version of this lens. Both lenses are slower than the Nikon 50mm at 2.8
