THe 18-70 that came with my D70 has a ton of dust inside, and I'm not sure how it got there. Plus, the lens iswobbly to no end. I called Nikon and they want about $100 to clean the thing down. Which makes no sense as I can get a brand new one with less wobble for $350 and sell this thing on ebay.

I actually do not use the 17 end of this lens, EVER! I was thinking of going with the 24-85 instead, as the glass it the same, the price is a little less, and the non-DX lenses do not have that wobble.

What I really need to know is, will my pictures be any less sharp. I love the picture quality of the 18-70, LOVE IT. I don't want to sacrafice anything here, NOTHING! DOes the DX do anything for me at all? I feel good about a non-DX lens in the future in case this technology does not catch on, which makes the 24-85 more appealing. I just want to make sure the pictures will be the same.

Has anyone used both on a Nikon D70 and compared the pictures? PLEASE HELP!

If you don't mind stepping out from the Nikon line, there's an excellent Sigma in your price range - Check out this 24-70 f/2.8 (a full-frame lens BTW) MTF curves, it best the 'L' Canon at three times the price: http://www.pbase.com/fstopjojo/2470

I know it's a lot more expensive, but I saw a big image improvement with the 17-55mm /f2.8 DX lens, over the 18-70mm kit lens.

if you are looking at sigma i'd look at the 18-50/2.8. you sacrifice the 50-70mm range (75-105mm in FF) in return for low light performance. a 24-70/2.8 sigma might be too wide.

i have the same problem with dust inside the chamber. it seems like a common problem for some? anyway, does anybody out there have experience with getting their lenses fully cleaned (inside out)? if so, where did you go to do it? shouldn't this sort of a thing be covered by the 5 year nikkor warranty?
