Constant aperture zooms, large f-stop primes, beefy construction, and AF-S inside are usually tell-tale signs that it's "pro grade". It used to be that AF-S signified Nikon's top stuff, but not anymore - AF-S technology has been incorporated into many recent lenses, including consumer grade ones.*But the cheapest Nikkor can also be used by a professional to achieve incredible results, namely the 50 f/1.8 (~$100).
