My preference is early in the week...monday or tuesday...and very early or very late in the day. Much quieter, leaving you plenty of time and space to set up, etc. and also much better light to work with. The zoo here really has really lame habitats, so I use a long lens to isolate the animal and get a nice tight crop.

If you can, go during the week (smaller crowd), preferably in the morning, when animals tend to be more active. Also, get a schedule for the zoo, so you know when feedings take place. As far as lenses go, take your new Sigma 70-210 f/2.8 for the outdoor shots, a tripod or monopod to support it (if you own either and it's allowed in the zoo), and grab a 50/1.8 for low-light indoor no-flash shots and you're set.
