Default Nikon 3100 Digital Camera ~ Need Help for Close-up pics

Hello...just purchased a Nikon 3100 dig. camera and need to be able to take close-ups of 'small objects'.
It doesn't seem to take good pics - no clarity - blurry, etc.
I have the closeup 'flower' on but should I set any other settings?
Is this camera unable to take clear pics of small objects?
Thank you. I'm new at this...

HI. your 3100will take great macro pix! You need to make sure that the little flower you see is GREEN. You cant zoom in or out to far or you will lose the green color. Also you must be very still when you are using the macro mode. I always use a tri pod. Tealblue

Thank you. 8)
I think I have the camera on 'auto' maybe that is causing a problem and also I think I need a tripod...really love this camera otherwise just not familiar with all the features...main problem is it is so 'tiny' (great for travelling) that I keep misplacing it.

my 3100 takes good close ups. I just make sure it is in macro mode(flower) and it does ok. The link below shows a picture I took just playing with it the night I got it. The pic was taken in my van at night with no interior lights on. Once again, this picture was just taken while testing the camera out.
