Default How come when I try to focus on something my Nikon P90 blinks red and beeps at me??

For some reason for example I will zoom in to get a picture and then the darn thing will beep at me and be red and is out of focus. What focus option should I have it on to better focus my objects? I always have to zoom out and I want the picture a little closer than it is allowing me. Is something wrong with my camera??? Do I not have a setting correct. This even implies when I am far away from an object and zoom in most times. Also, where should you aim the brackets at on your subject? Thanks!
