Default Nikon 885 - is it superseded?

I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and looking to buy the 885 for jewellery photography.

Does anyone know if they've stopped making the 885? All the shops are out of stock. We've been told by one shop that the 885 is obsolete. The Nikon distributor is tight-lipped, neither confirming or denying the rumours.

Even though it seems to be a fine camera, I don't particularly want to fork out the money, only to find a newer, "better", cheaper model released shortly.

the now introduce "newer and better" models about every 6-8 months now. if your addicted to nikon i would look more at the 4500 or 5700.

i myself use nikon film cameras f5 n90s nikonos but i found i prefered the Minolta D7i over all. 2 levels of macro outstanding lens. non propriatary batteries and one heck of a good image 5mp

also reference this thread below it might have your answer for a jewelry camera

thanks for the info. I guess a good camera remains a good camera regardless of what else is on/coming on the market. Unfortunately the 4500 & 5700, and the Minolta are out of our price range. One day...
