Default Coolpix S3000 problem

My daughter has a S3000 which is now out of guarantee.
Unfortunately although it hasn't had a lot of use, when ever she tries to extend the pop out lens it shows a message "lens error" and the shutter button refuses to work.
If she leaves the lens retracted it will still takes shots wide angle. I just wonder if anyone knows of a quick fix or is it a bin job?.
She hasn't contacted Nikon yet as I told her I would try here first.
Also is this a common fault with coolpix ?
