Default Why do Nikon Coolpix cameras get such bad image quality reviews?

Hi all,

I'm interested in buying a Nikon Coolpix S5200 camera. I've tried one out in a store and it seems very nice. There's a good unboxing video on YouTube and that guy seems to like it, too. I've searched for example photos on Flickr and, when I can find one, they look good to me. (Steve's hasn't reviewed it.)

So why does almost every review of a Coolpix S series camera say that images are soft and noisy? It just seems odd to me that the image quality of these cameras would be so universally panned and that Nikon would never fix the problem.

Can any satisfied Coolpix users give me an honest critique? Thanks! : )

Todd

G'day todd

I was playing with a 510 yesterday and it seemed okay to me while using <20x zoom
over 20x the image did lose contrast and it took ages to autofocus

The owner of the camera thought it was 110% great so there is a happy user

Phil

Thanks for the reply Phil.

I decided to go ahead and order a Coolpix S6500. I saw some example photos today from an online review and I thought they looked really great:

I decided not to get the Coolpix S5200 because I saw some photos (in a review from the site above) that looked blurry on the right 1/4 of the frame. I recently had a Sony Cyber-shot that I had to return for a similar issue.

I'll post a review of the Coolpix S6500 when I receive it!

The Nikon Coolpix S6500 is a seriously underrated camera. Great image quality in both good light and bad light. Sharp lens and great image stabilization. I'll post more later, but so far I'm liking it!

I and others who know might not trust Cannon , my experiance, Ok my Canon A95 and other A models had well known sticky lens Issues , Canon A650 light leak shows up on photos known fault replaced twice ,, G9 dust entering camera sensor Issues known fault and hair enters viewfinder again known fault , so annoying as well , So I am finished with Cannon since the G9 , since 2011 use Fuji compacts no Issues great pictures, since 2010 happy with my Nikon DSLR's D40 and D3100 again 100% no Issues. simply great cameras to use , good luck with your Nikon compacts OP I would expect nill or not so many Issues as with a Canon just imo.
